The wonderful medicinal water of Harkány
The medicinal water of Harkány emerges from depths of 50-70 meters, with an average temperature of 62 °C. Its mineral content is more than 1,000 mg per liter. From a medical point of view, its most significant mineral is the divalent sulfur compound, carbonyl sulfide (COS), which is dissolved in water in a gaseous state under pressure. In the flowing water, when released from pressure, it immediately begins to decompose, transforming into hydrogen sulfide gas, which thus gives the water its characteristic odor. The elemental sulfur, which is found in small particles in the water, can be clearly observed in the pool in side light. Carbonyl sulfide is found in an amount of around 12 mg in 1 liter of medicinal water. This compound was not previously known, it was discovered here in the 1860s, during the chemical analysis of the medicinal water. It is very actively absorbed into the body both through the skin and by inhalation: its absorption is 150 times higher than that of tetravalent sulfur compounds (sulfates).
What problems is Harkány water good for?
For musculoskeletal problems
Effect of medicinal water For musculoskeletal problems The medicinal water of Harkány is excellent for the treatment of musculoskeletal, rheumatic and joint diseases, thanks to the divalent sulfur found in the medicinal water. In our body, organic molecules participate in the construction of joint cartilage, of which this divalent sulfur is an important element.
The sulfur found in the water has been proven to be incorporated into cartilage, thus helping to rebuild and replace the sulfur-containing compounds that make up cartilage. The additional healing power of water lies in the buoyancy of the water, its hydrostatic pressure, which reduces body weight in the water and thus the load on the weight-bearing joints.
90% of musculoskeletal patients suffer from degenerative joint and spine diseases, which is why the treatment of these problems is extremely important. The hyaline cartilage of the weight-bearing joints, hips, knees, and ankles is especially severely damaged, with increased clinical symptoms of pain, swelling, and limited mobility. Therefore, Harkány medicinal water is perfect for treating musculoskeletal problems and diseases such as
- Wear-and-tear joint diseases(Arthrosis)
- Small joints(Arthrosisa)
- Inflammatory joint diseases (Arthritis)
- Hip and knee joint diseases (Arthrosis)
- Gout
- Spine diseases

On dermatological problems
In addition to treating musculoskeletal problems, the medicinal water of Harkány is also excellent for relieving the symptoms of psoriasis, i.e. psoriasis dermatological problems.
The healing power of the water lies in the fact that the salts dissolved in the water and the sulfur-containing gas found in fresh water and released from it, absorbed through the skin and respiratory tract epithelium, help to suppress pathological processes.
The effectiveness of the medicinal water is confirmed by research, according to which, after a 3-week treatment period, the PASI* value in psoriasis patients decreased to 34.3% on the 21st day compared to the initial value of 100%.
